Favorite Quotes

I love philosophy and those who lived it and taught others to learn to be philosophical. As a result, many of my favorite quotes are from the great philosophers of old such as Soren Kierkegaard, the Buddha and the Dalai Lama. Please feel free to share some of your favorite quotes with me below, in the comment section or tell me what you think of any quotes listed here.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."  Marianne Williamson

"People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for freedom of thought which they seldom use." Soren Kierkegaard

"I could not, at any age, be content to take my place by the fireside and simply look on. Life was meant to be lived. Curiosity must be kept alive. One must never, for whatever reason, turn his back on life." Eleanor Roosevelt

"Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill." Buddha

"Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them." Dalai Lama

"One day you will wake up and there won't be time to do the things you've always wanted to do. Do them now." Paulo Coelho

"Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards." Soren Kierkegaard

"Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without." The Buddha

"Better than a thousand hollow words, is one word that brings peace." Buddha

"To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear." Buddha

"Don't allow your wounds to transform you into someone you are not." Paulo Coelho

"Our life always expresses the result of our dominant thoughts." Soren Kierkegaard

"The function of prayer is not to influence God, but rather to change the nature of the one who prays." Soren Kierkegaard

Not quotes but mottos I want to live by:

One year from now you will have wished you'd started today.

If I quit now, I will soon be back where I started. And when I started, I was desperately wishing to be where I am now.
